The Ansonia FFA Keeps Busy
Throughout the year the Ansonia FFA has been very busy and has been striving to get their members involved in as many events as possible. On September 12th several members of the Ansonia FFA attended a Greenhand Conference at Versailles School. The purpose of this conference was to introduce new FFA members to the opportunities available to them through the many paths and divisions of agriculture. During this event members rotated around many stations, as they did they learned about all the opportunities that the FFA can present to them.
Also in September on the 21st a group of FFA members got involved by participating in the Ansonia vs. Versailles Softball match in Versailles. Ansonia’s biggest hopes were fulfilled when they won the game, and they collectively overcame their rival Versailles. After the game, members on both sides partook in a cookout where they were encouraged to meet new friends and have more fun. Through this activity, members learned not only the benefits of teamwork, but they also found a fun filled way to get to know others from different chapters and connect even with their opponents.
On September 24th members found themselves getting involved once more through the Farm Science Review. Advisor, Mrs. Williams, took the kids to this event, and once there students were encouraged to go throughout the grounds and dig up all the information they could to benefit their curious minds. Members walked around several booths composed of people spouting agricultural enriched futures through their company, sales items, advertising, agricultural technology, and colleges. This event broadened the horizons of agriculture for the group and helped enlighten them on their brighter futures.
Once November came around, the students were still hungry for the knowledge and insights that the FFA could bring them. On November 16th some of our members attended a Livestock Judging Leadership Night. Those members who participated were Megan Bergman, Amber Bergman, Sarah Rhodes, Sam Rhodes, Cierra Longenecker, Tyler Clark, and Mackenzie Zumbrun. Advisor, Mrs. Williams, graciously volunteered to take these members to this fun filled learning experience. Once at the event, the group went to several team building and life molding activities to help them reflect upon their values, and they even listened in on an uplifting speech. After attending these activities, all FFA chapters combined together to have pizza and mingle with others. Through this our FFA met many new friends with similar interests, and created many fantastic memories. Once their bellies were filled the team went on to a livestock judging instruction course. Here they learned the basics on how to participate in a livestock judging CDE, and how to tell if an animal is of good breeding and structure. The animals in which they practiced on included: pigs, cows, sheep, and goats. Those who participated in this event found it quite educational and found much enjoyment by partaking in it.
Also in November on the 23rd , Ansonia FFA members: Robert Chirstman, Amber Bergman, and Nick Mayo attended the Darke County Soil and Water Conservation Banquet. Last year, the Ansonia FFA entered their decorated rain barrel into the Darke County Soil and Water’s 4th annual Rain Barrel Contest under the theme of the 1960’s. This theme was created as a way to honor Soil and Water’s 60th Anniversary. This contest was meant to be a fun filled way for high school students to get involved in their community, and was open to all Darke County Schools. The organization’s main goal overall is to keep tabs on our local natural resources, and to find a way to utilize and preserve them. While attending the ceremony, the Ansonia FFA received their first place prize of $100 for their rain barrel.
As you can see, the Ansonia FFA was very busy throughout the months of September and November. Through all of these events our members learned not only about agriculture’s effects on their lives, but also the influence that others have on their lives as well. With the guiding hand of our chapter these members were pushed out of their comfort zones and allowed the opportunity to prosper through the Ansonia FFA. We hope that more students will get involved with our chapter and that they will use it to assist in the achieving of their goals.
